A Map With No Edges

The map they drew that morning had no edges, which their teacher would later say was mathematically impossible, and which the children would later say was simply true.

Pip drew the river first, because the river always came first. Odalys drew the hollow tree where the bees kept their winter secrets. And Sam, who was younger than the other two and knew it, drew a single dotted line leading off the page entirely, with a small arrow that said keep going.

"You can't just draw off the edge," Pip said.

"The moon didn't stay on the edge either," said Sam. "Why should the map?"

Nobody had an answer to that, so they packed three sandwiches, one lantern, and a ball of red string, and they kept going.
